Master German Time & Dates
Learn days of the week, months, seasons, and how to tell time like a native.
Real-Life Use: You need this to make appointments ("Montag um 14 Uhr" = Monday at 2pm), ask when something opens ("Wann macht es auf?" = When does it open?), and talk about plans.

Note: "Samstag" (West Germany) and "Sonnabend" (East Germany) both mean Saturday. Just know both exist!

🕐 Telling Time (Die Uhrzeit)
Basic Format:
"Es ist [hour] Uhr." (It is [hour] o'clock.)
Examples:
- Es ist ein Uhr. = It's 1 o'clock
- Es ist zwei Uhr. = It's 2 o'clock
- Es ist zwanzig Uhr. = It's 8pm (20:00)
Minutes Past the Hour:
"Es ist [hour] Uhr [minutes]."
- Es ist drei Uhr zehn. = It's 3:10
- Es ist fünf Uhr fünfundzwanzig. = It's 5:25
Half Past & Quarter Past:
- Es ist halb zehn. = It's 9:30 (half ten — Germans count half to the next hour!)
- Es ist Viertel nach vier. = It's 4:15 (quarter past four)
- Es ist Viertel vor fünf. = It's 4:45 (quarter before five)
⚠️ Important: The "Half" Trick
❌ English: It's 4:30
✅ German: "Es ist halb fünf" (It's half five = half TO five, not half past)
German counts DOWN to the next hour, not up from the current one. This is the #1 mistake beginners make!

✍️ Practice Sentences
1. "Am Montag habe ich einen Termin um zehn Uhr."
(On Monday I have an appointment at 10 o'clock.)
2. "Der 25. Dezember ist Weihnachten."
(December 25 is Christmas.)
3. "Mein Geburtstag ist im Juli."
(My birthday is in July.)
4. "Wann machst du Feierabend? — Um achtzehn Uhr."
(When do you finish work? — At 6pm.)
5. "Es ist halb neun. Wir müssen gehen!"
(It's 8:30. We have to go!)
